OVERALL OBJECTIVES: The overall objective is to provide the participant with practical and clinically relevant information. Upon completion of this CME activity, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to describe the current approach to formulating differential diagnoses, diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive management of the various disciplines presented. *Advanced treatment choices for ischemic heart disease - This lecture provides a broad overview of chronic ischemic heart disease, including: 1. Risk stratification; 2. Optimal medical therapy for primary and secondary prevention; 3. Options for revascularization, when appropriate. The lecture emphasizes the current data supporting various therapeutic choices. * Anticoagulation in practice: New drugs, old drugs - The lecture will review the mechanism by which blood clots with emphasis on the coagulation factor and platelets. The mechanism and clinical use of the common and newer anticoagulant drugs will be discussed. *Rheumatology in practice - Gout, Giant Cell Arteritis, and Distinguishing Inflammatory Arthritis from Osteoarthritis *Sleep disorders -Insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness are some of the most common presenting complaints to the primary care physician. Understanding the differential diagnoses of these complaints allows optimal management. Current and future treatment options will be presented. *Clinical updates in infectious disease: Frequently asked questions - In this talk, the speaker will provide clinical cases on common ID curbside consults, with recommendations and resources for the primary care physician, highlighting briefly the clinical evidence underlying our practice. *Diabetes: Old and new tratment strategies and case discussion - The currently available interventions to achieve the recommended treatment targets will be compared and contrasted and a consensus treatment algorithm will be presented. *Osteoporosis update 2009 - This lecture will review the current pharmacologic and new pharmacologic interventions and develop a scheme for reducing fracture risk.Disease of the colon: IBD and IBS review the current approach to colon cancer - The speaker will discuss the current controversies in screening and evaluation. The speaker will also review the prognosis and treatment with an emphasis on chemotherapy related side effects. *Obesity management: The speaker will review optimal approaches to the prevention and treatment of excess body weight in the primary care setting and will discuss strategies for preventing, diagnosing and treating medical and psychological complications of obesity. |
