| Physician Accreditation | This activity has been reviewed and accepted for up to 12 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to the AMA PRA equivalent to the AMA PRA category 1 credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. |

*Hormonal contraception - i. Describe the pharmacologic differences in oral contraceptives. ii. Identify the relative and absolute contraindication to oral contraceptives and determine the appropriate starting dosages. iii. Identify patients who need emergency contraception and choose the most appropriate method for emergency contraception. *Osteoporosis - i. Identify the patients at risk for an osteoporosis fracture. ii. Choose the best method to evaluate patients at risk for osteoporosis. iii. Choose the best medication for treating osteoporosis, and their side effects. iv. Identify which treated patient would be a candidate for repeating the DXA scan. *Update on EBM management of type 2 diabetes - i. Identify the therapeutic goals in treating type 2 diabetes for each unique patient ii. Choose the appropriate oral therapy for treating type 2 diabetes iii. Identify when insulin should be initiated in type 2 diabetes and list the therapeutic insulin options. *Anemia i. Identify the probable anemia in selected patients based upon know clinical information. ii. Choose the evidence-based diagnostic evaluation for various clinical scenarios. iii. Identify the therapeutic options for each of the common anemia’s. iv. Choose the best follow-up plans for assessing the efficacy of the treatment for each anemia. *Hypertension – Evaluation, Treatment and Follow-up - 1. Describe the non-pharmacologic methods to manage hypertension and their expected benefits. 2. Choose the appropriate initial medication to treat hypertension and the subsequent. additional medications that should be added to achieve blood pressure control. 3. Identify the common side effects of antihypertensive medications and the management of these side effects. 4. Identify patients who require evaluation for secondary causes of hypertension and describe the evaluation required for each cause. *Use & interpretation of thyroid tests - i. Determine the most appropriate diagnosis for the various combination of serum test result of thyroid function. ii. Choose the appropriate follow-up testing required to assess abnormal thyroid function tests. iii. Determine if the abnormal thyroid tests are attributable to a specific medication. * Update on EBM management of type 2 diabetes - i. Identify the therapeutic goals in treating type 2 diabetes for each unique patient ii. Choose the appropriate oral therapy for treating type 2 diabetes iii. List three types of patients that physicians typically find “difficult” to deal with. 2. Describe effective strategies to manage “difficult” patients. 3. Identify counter-transference issues when dealing with “difficult” patients. *Erectile Dysfunction - 1. Distinguish organic from psychological causes of ED. 2. Determine what treatments are effective for different causes of ED. 3. Describe the proper workup of patients with ED. *Bipolar Disorder in Primary Care - 1. List basic criteria for bipolar disorder. 2. Identify common ways patients with bipolar disorder present. 3. Describe treatments for primary care providers to use with these patients. *The Suicidal Patient - 1. Evaluate patients with suicidal ideation in the office setting. 2. Determine appropriate management strategies for suicidal patients. 3. List four risk factors for completed suicide. *Depression - 1. List criteria for major depressive disorder. 2. Distinguish major depression from dysthymia and adjustment disorder. 3. Provide optimal treatment for patients with depression. *Obstructive Sleep Apnea - 1. Identify patients in practice with OSA. 2. List complications of OSA. 3. Discuss treatment options with patients. |
