This program complies with MD and DO mandatory Geriatric CME required by many states "All general internists and family physicians who have a patient population of which more than 25% are 65 years of age or older shall complete at least 20 hours of all mandatory CME in geriatric medicine or the care of older patients". All other physicians are encouraged to take a course in geriatric medicine, including geriatric pharmacology, as part of their mandatory CME. Following this course, the participant should be able to identify causes of the disorders described; implement a differential diagnosis and laboratory assessment plans; outline the therapeutic intervention, possible complications and preventive measures. This activity is expected to result in increased confidence in making an appropriate diagnosis and providing effective treatment and referral or follow-up care with the overall goal of improving patient outcomes. *Challenges in screening for Prostate Cancer - Objective: 1) Understand the value of prostate cancer screening with PSA and DRE in older men. 2) Explain clearly to patients the side effects of prostate cancer screening and treatment. 3) Educate patients about the risks of prostate cancer compared to other health risks. *Evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence - Objective: 1) Understand common causes for acute urinary incontinence. 2) Understand common causes for persistent urinary incontinence. 3) Understand the various treatments for urinary incontinence. *Evaluation and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and peripheral vascular disease (PVD)- Objective: 1) Understand the risks for and presentation of DVT. 2) Understand the indications for and types of anticoagulants. 3) Understand the risks of PVD and how to assess for its presence. *Evaluation and treatment for heart failure - Objective: 1) Understand the prevalence and risks of heart failure. 2) Understand the evaluation of heart failure. 3) Understand the various treatments for heart failure. *Dementia and delirium, and distinguishing the difference in older adults - Objective: 1) Understand the common causes of memory loss in older adults. 2) Understand the various presentations for the common causes of dementia. 3) Understand the presentation of delirium, and how to distinguish it from dementia. *Drug Therapy in the Elderly - At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to: 1) List reasons why older patients are at greater risk for drug reactions. 2) Discuss the body system most important relative to drug elimination in the elderly and list several drug categories affected by this system. 3) Discuss the body system most important for drug metabolism in the elderly and list several drug categories affected by this system. 4) List categories of drugs that have principally anti cholinergic activity and should be avoided in the elderly. 5) List 7 inappropriate drugs in the elderly according to the Beers category. *Pressure Ulcers - At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to: 1) List 4 major risk factors for pressure ulcers. 2) Distinguish between pressure, stasis and ischemic ulcers relative to location and other characteristics. 3) List the key principles of prevention of pressure ulcers. 4) Discuss the role of proper hydration and Nutrition relative to pressure ulcer development and healing. 5) Discuss indications for urinary catheters, Wound Vac, turning beds and Flap procedures in patients with pressure ulcers. *Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and Screening - At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to: 1) Discuss atypical presentation of disease in the elderly and list two examples. 2) List the members of the Interdisciplinary Geriatric Team in the typical evaluation of the frail elderly patient. 3) Discuss key normal changes of aging associated with the aging liver and kidney. 4) List an example of an abnormal cardiac finding and neurological finding that may be normal in the elderly. 5) Discuss the essentials of appropriate health maintenance in the frail elderly. *Evaluation Fall Risk in the Elderly - At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to: 1) Define a Fall in an older person. 2) State the philosophy of Fall Risk Prevention in the Elderly. 3) List major medical causes of Falls in the Elderly. 4) List major environmental contributors to Falls in the Elderly. 5) List key Fall Risk interventions in the LTC setting to prevent injury from Falls. *Evaluation and Management of Osteoporosis - At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to: 1) Discuss major risk factors for primary Osteoporosis. 2) Differentiate between bone quality and bone mass. 3) Discuss the medical work up for Osteoporosis. 4) List the non-pharmacological management of Osteoporosis. 5) List major categories of pharmacological therapy for Osteoporosis. |
